How ttoppen works

Voting

The new chart

Nobody sees how the votes stand during the day, not even us; you only see your own. Every night at 00:00 UTC (01:00 Swedish winter time, 02:00 summer time) the votes are counted, the new top 20 is published and you get new votes.

Weekly charts

Every week also gets a best-of list, added up from the week's daily charts (Monday to Sunday): each day a song gets 20 points for first place, 19 for second, down to 1 point for twentieth. Most points wins; on a tie, more days on the chart, then the better best placing. You'll find them in the archive.

Groups

In a group you vote on your own top 20 with people you've invited: five + five a day in each group. Your votes in groups count for the chart for everyone too, but there you count as one person: if you vote in several groups the same day, your votes are split evenly between them. Starting more groups never gives anyone more say.

How is the score worked out?

Each song has a score. Every night it's worked out like this:

new score = yesterday's score × 0.8 + plus-votes − minus-votes

So votes fade: every night a song keeps 80% of its score, and a vote has lost half its weight after about three days. A song has to keep getting votes to stay on the chart, while a new song can climb fast.

The 20 songs with the highest score above zero make the chart. On a tie, the song with more plus-votes that day goes first, then the one placed higher the day before, then the one that got its first vote earliest. A song whose score drops below 0.5 without new votes leaves the race; it needs new votes to come back.

An example

A song over four days:

DayVotesCalculationScore
1+100 × 0.8 + 1010.0
2+310 × 0.8 + 311.0
3none11 × 0.88.8
4−48.8 × 0.8 − 43.0

Fair play

One account per person. We block accounts that cheat, for example with throwaway addresses or many accounts from the same place, and leave their votes out of the count.
